About the event

The German Requiem by Johannes Brahms is surely one of the great compositional masterpieces of the nineteenth century. In addition to its rich musical textures, though, it also holds secrets. Brahms himself hinted at one, saying that a well-known melody lay under the surface of the Requiem—and there are many others, with various compositional tricks hidden in the music. In this live stream, conductor and musicologist Joseph Fort will offer his guide to the German Requiem, talking about its history and showing some musical features that you can listen out for, as we work through a (licensed) recording of the work. For those who know and love the Requiem, it will introduce some new ways of listening to this music, and for those who know it less well it will provide a clear guide to this masterpiece. Please join us for what promises to be an informative and enjoyable evening with some wonderful music!
